In order to succeed in ANY sport, you HAVE to have the following;
Commitment
Attitude
Work ethic
Sportsmanship
Teamwork
Effort
Mental toughness
People skills
Dedication
Being coach-able
And what do these all mean you ask? Well…. You first need: 1) Commitment -When you try out for a sport, you have to be all in. Being part of a team is a huge commitment. Your team will be counting on you to show up to practices, meetings, early morning workouts, etc. If you are not serious about the sport you are playing and don’t feel like working on the skills you have to work on and instead want to hang out with your friends and go to the movies or whatever then don’t tryout at all. You have to be willing to make some sacrifices that will better the team.
2) Attitude - Always be positive! When you have a positive outlook on things, it ends up being contagious. And more people will start to gravitate towards you. Nobody wants to be around someone who is constantly bringing people down as well as their self-down. Negative energy is just toxic. It is best to be positive in ANY circumstances whether you win or lose or your teammate is having a hard time with the plays or whatever, be positive, and encourage them. You want to build your team up and in order to do that you have to speak positive.
3) Work ethic * Definition- The principle that hard work is intrinsically virtuous or worthy of reward. -In other words, you cannot be the BEST you if don’t have work ethic. “I have nothing in common with lazy people who blame others for their lack of success. Great things come from hard work and perseverance, no excuses.” –Kobe Bryant. If you want to be successful in anything you have to stop making excuses and go out and work on your skills. If you say that you aren’t good in math that’s right, it’s because you’ve never studied, if you’re not good in writing it’s because you’ve never written before. If you don’t have the desire to get better then you will not go far in life. You know what you need to work on. You know what you need to do to better yourself. Yes, there will be people in your life that are better than you and some that will talk down on you and your goals... you just have to ignore them and do you. “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard” – Kevin Durant.
4) Sportsmanship * Definition- Fair and generous behavior or treatment of others, especially in a sports contest. * Sportsmanship tells a lot about yourself as well as the team or school you represent. Every coach in your life time will tell you to always have good sportsmanship no matter the case. Sportsmanship is a way to portray yourself as humble, rather than prideful and bitter. Every team practices and works hard just like you and no matter what the outcome is everyone wants to be told that they did well. Even if its something little like lining up after the game and saying “good job” to each and every one of the members from the other team.
5) Teamwork *Definition- The combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient. * Teamwork is a crucial part of being in a team. That key word Team. Teamwork is working together as one to accomplish a common goal. It’s helping your teammates out if they are struggling with certain things. When you have a unified team you get the job done easier. Have you ever heard the phrase “teamwork makes the dream work”? Well, it’s true and I guarantee that in ANY sport you play, if you don’t work well together as a whole then you’re less likely to win a sufficient number of games. These are the first 5 tips you will need to be successful in any sport. Next week we will go over the rest of the 5.
